Why You Should Not Send to Purchased Email Lists

Last updated on May 12, 2026

Purchasing an email list might seem like a quick way to reach a large audience, but it is one of the most damaging things you can do to your email marketing program. This article explains why Mailzzy does not permit sending to purchased lists and what the risks are.

What Is a Purchased Email List?

A purchased email list is a collection of email addresses that have been compiled and sold by a third party. These contacts have not opted in to receive emails from your business and have no prior relationship with you.

This is different from your own organically grown list, where every subscriber has explicitly agreed to receive emails from you.

It Violates Mailzzy's Acceptable Use Policy

Sending to purchased, rented, or scraped email lists is a violation of Mailzzy's Terms of Use and Acceptable Use Policy. Accounts found to be sending to purchased lists may be suspended or terminated. This policy exists to protect all Mailzzy users — because poor sending behaviour on our platform affects deliverability for everyone.

It Damages Your Sender Reputation

The people on a purchased list did not ask to hear from you. As a result:

  • They are far more likely to mark your email as spam
  • Many addresses will be invalid, causing high bounce rates
  • The list may contain spam traps that will flag your domain immediately

Even a single campaign to a purchased list can cause lasting damage to your sender reputation that takes months to recover.

It May Break the Law

In many countries, sending unsolicited commercial email is illegal. Laws such as GDPR in Europe, CAN-SPAM in the United States, and CASL in Canada require that recipients have given clear consent to receive marketing emails. Violating these laws can result in significant fines.

Note: Mailzzy strongly recommends consulting a legal professional if you are unsure about your obligations under applicable data protection and anti-spam laws.

It Simply Does Not Work

Beyond the legal and deliverability risks, purchased lists tend to perform extremely poorly. The recipients do not know your brand, have no interest in your offer, and are unlikely to engage. Your open rates, click rates, and conversion rates from a purchased list will typically be far below what you would achieve with your own opted-in subscribers.

How to Build a Legitimate Email List

  • Add sign-up forms to your website, landing pages, and social media profiles
  • Offer an incentive such as a discount, free resource, or exclusive content
  • Use double opt-in to confirm each subscriber's interest and verify their address
  • Import existing contacts only if you have a clear record of their consent
