How to Unsubscribe Contacts in Bulk

Last updated on May 15, 2026

There are situations where you need to unsubscribe a large group of contacts at once — for example, after receiving a batch of direct unsubscribe requests, when removing a segment of inactive contacts, or before a major list clean. Mailzzy allows you to unsubscribe multiple contacts in a single action without needing to update each record individually.

Unsubscribe vs Delete: Which Should You Use?

Before proceeding, confirm that bulk unsubscribing — rather than deleting — is the right action for your situation:

  • Unsubscribe – The contact’s record remains in your account, but they are excluded from future campaigns. Their unsubscribed status is stored and honoured. If the same address is later imported again, Mailzzy will retain their unsubscribed status and they will not be added to your active list.
  • Delete – The record is permanently removed from your account. If the same address is later imported, it will be treated as a new contact with no history.

For contacts who have explicitly asked to be removed from your list, or who you are removing as part of a list clean, unsubscribing is generally the safer and more compliant approach. It preserves the record of their opt-out.

How to Bulk Unsubscribe Contacts in Mailzzy

  1. Go to the Contacts page.
  2. Use filters, search, or group/tag navigation to surface the contacts you want to unsubscribe. For example, filter by a specific tag, group, contact status, or last engagement date.
  3. Select the contacts you want to unsubscribe by clicking the checkbox next to each one. To select all visible contacts matching your filter, use the Select All option at the top of the list.
  4. Once your selection is confirmed, open the bulk actions menu (usually labelled Actions or a similar dropdown).
  5. Select Unsubscribe from the available bulk actions.
  6. Confirm the action when prompted.

Mailzzy will update the status of all selected contacts to Unsubscribed. They will no longer appear as active recipients and will not receive any future campaigns from your account.

Note: For very large selections, Mailzzy may process the status update in the background. The changes will be reflected in your contact list once processing is complete. Refresh the page after a few minutes to see the updated statuses.

How to Bulk Unsubscribe by Importing a Suppression List

If you have a list of email addresses that need to be unsubscribed — for example, a list of opt-outs collected through a separate channel — you can upload them via CSV rather than finding and selecting each contact manually:

  1. Prepare a CSV file containing only the email addresses you want to unsubscribe, one per row.
  2. Go to Contacts and look for the Import option.
  3. Select the option to import as Unsubscribed or to update contact status. Mailzzy will process the file and update each matching address to an unsubscribed status.
  4. Review the import results to confirm all addresses were processed correctly.

Confirming the Unsubscribes Took Effect

After completing a bulk unsubscribe, you can verify the outcome by:

  • Filtering your contact list by Status: Unsubscribed to see the updated records
  • Checking the contact count on the affected group or segment to confirm it has reduced accordingly
