How to Exclude Groups from a Campaign

Last updated on October 22, 2026

Excluding a group lets you send to a broad audience while leaving out the people who shouldn't get this email.

When to Exclude Groups

  • Send a promotion to all customers except those who already bought.
  • Leave out your internal team or test contacts.
  • Avoid emailing people who are already getting another campaign.

Exclude a Group

  1. Create or edit a regular campaign.
  2. In the Recipients step, choose the groups to send to.
  3. Select Advanced options.
  4. Under Don't send to, choose the groups that shouldn't receive the campaign.
  5. Check your recipients and continue.

Once you've added exclusions, the link shows how many you've set, for example Advanced options (2 excluded).

How Exclusions Work

  • Exclusions always win. If a contact is in a group you selected and a group you excluded, they won't receive the campaign.
  • You exclude the same kind of audience you send to. When you send to groups, you exclude groups; when you send to tags, you exclude tags; and when you send to segments, you exclude segments.
  • A group can't be selected and excluded in the same campaign.

Note: Exclusions are available for regular and resend campaigns. They aren't available for sequential, retarget or A/B test campaigns.
